- This article explains the actions of a delirious woman that created a major problem outside of Waffle House over the course of a morning. Early in the morning the woman was being disruptive and trespassing, but left after the police were called (leaving her belongings). Later around noon she returned for her belongings and caused further problems, involving exposing herself and violating an employee. This time the authorities arrived in time to detain her.
- The primary problem that is displayed in this story is the lack of security and muscle at Waffle Houses. There tends to be a risk for more problematic people at Waffle House late at night, and employees that do not want to handle them, which is why there is an opportunity present.
- Waffle House owners and employees suffer from this problem.
"Pensacola Bay Bridge $15 million early completion bonus approaching for contractor"
https://www.pnj.com/story/news/2019/01/24/pensacola-bay-bridge-15-million-early-completion-bonus-approaching/2650495002/
- The Pensacola Bay Bridge is currently being replaced by a larger bridge, and is due to be completed in the next two years. When the construction contract was first negotiated they included a $15 million bonus if the bridge was open to traffic by February 5th 2019. As the date is approaching the crews are working around weather delays to earn the substantial bonus, but the chances are slim considering the amount of work remaining.
- As presented in the article, the problem is that the bridge may not be finished in time to receive the bonus. This is a combination of a lack of time, workers, materials (potentially), and working weather conditions.
- This problem belongs to the Skanska USA contractor.

- For many immigrants, the ability to own and profit off of your own business is a primary benefit of living in the US. The writer, an Indian immigrant, used her H-4 visa to give back to her community and open an art studio employing US citizens. In the article she explains how the proposed rollback would prevent her from running the business she has built from her own funds.
- The obvious problem in this article is that a small-business owner, working legally to hire US citizens, may take a major financial loss and be unable to own her own business because of a proposed change concerning work visas.
- In this article specifically, the problem belongs to the author, but this problem exists for any immigrant that owns a small business via a H-4 visa currently.

- This article from the Florida keys explains the continuing impact of hurricanes. Anytime there is a significant storm that hits Florida, there is going to be roof and exterior damage to buildings. This is often perceived as a good thing due to the increase in jobs for contractors and repairmen, but opens the door for people with bad intentions. As stated in the article, two individuals posed as licensed contractors and received payment from homeowners without making any repairs. At this time they have been charged with jail time for their crimes.
- Although the criminals in question were punished for their actions, the homeowners still had to live with a damaged home for an extended period of time, and may have faced financial difficulty in the time between paying the criminals and finding justice. Fraudulent contractors are common in disaster areas because of the massive amount of people trying to get their homes repaired with little regard for legitimacy.
- This may be a problem for any property owner that hires a contractor to make repairs after a major storm.

- In this article a new non-stop flight route from the Gulf Coast to South Florida is being introduced by Silver Airlines. To promote the new route the airline is offering tickets at $89. This promotion will only be available online from February to April and only for flights before November 2019.
- The problem in this brief article is the ability to operate the airline with fares at such low prices, and specifically assure that each flight would be fully booked. If the airline does not fully book each flight there is no way that the costs would be covered.
- This is a problem for Silver Airlines.

Some of your stories are so cool!! The Waffle House story sounds insane but super interesting at the same time. But I do agree with you on the Waffle House employees having a serious problem. If the heads at Waffle House don't do something about the security there, it could lead to more issues and even employees feeling unsafe which is never a good thing in the work environment. It's also crazy to me that Silver Airlines is having the promotion with the low air fare. If I were reading that article, I probably would not have recognized the problem as well as you did.
ReplyDeleteHey Joseph!
ReplyDeleteThese are some really interesting stories and most of them really took me by surprise. The one about the lack of security at Waffle House really shocked me because I remember working at a fast food restaurant at night and I never felt completely safe but nothing ever happened, thank God. So, the fact that they are reporting about how unsafe it is sometimes when working in this kind of environment really makes you think whether we need more security in these type of places. Clearly, we do.
Great post!
Hi Joseph! Great picks for stories! There was definitely a great variety for the stories you picked. The Waffle House story was insane, its crazy how some things like that happen and it goes under the radar. Seeing this variety makes you really think about how many smaller unmet needs there are. An example is the issue for the homeowners in the keys. It's something that only the people who are directly affected deal with but its a major life-changing issue for the people affected. Great post as always!
